Getting started

  1. Install Raven Mesh from Google Play or the Apple App Store.
  2. On first launch, choose a username. Nothing is sent anywhere - this is stored only on your device.
  3. To start a mesh: tap Create mesh. A QR code and a link are generated - share either with the people you want to join.
  4. To join a mesh: tap Join mesh, then either scan the QR code or paste the link from whoever created it.
  5. Once connected, use the Chats tab to message, the Network tab to see who’s directly in range, and the Map tab for live location if peers have opted in to share it.

Common questions

Do I need internet or a SIM card? No. Raven Mesh connects phones directly over Wi-Fi Direct or Wi-Fi Aware. No cell signal, no Wi-Fi router and no internet connection are required for chat to work between phones that are in range of each other.

How far apart can two phones be and still connect? This depends on the phones’ Wi-Fi hardware and the environment - typically similar range to a Wi-Fi Direct file transfer, commonly tens of meters, more outdoors with clear line of sight. Messages can also hop through other phones in the mesh to reach someone out of direct range.

What happens if I lose connection to someone mid-mesh? Raven Mesh queues messages addressed to a peer that’s out of range and delivers them once a path to that peer is available again, either directly or by relaying through another phone in the mesh.

Is there a free version? Yes. The free tier supports a small mesh. A one-time in-app purchase removes the peer limit permanently - no subscription.

How do I leave a mesh or wipe my data? Go to Network > Leave mesh to leave and clear local mesh data, or Settings > Clear data to reset the app entirely. If you’ve set a duress PIN, entering it at the lock screen wipes local data (messages, media, mesh membership) behind a disguised error screen.

See the Privacy Policy for exactly what data the app touches and where it goes.
